Workout 1 – The Paralympic years
Welcome to the very first blog post on my website! Over the coming months, I will be releasing some of the sets we did during those Paralympic Years – from Sam in Beijing 2008, to Ollie and Charlotte in both London 2012, and Rio 2016. Hopefully many coaches and the next generation of swimmers coming through will find these useful and insightful!
Over the last few months I have been fortunate to speak to many coaches and sports science practitioners, and the topic of combination sets have come up frequently. I found that these are great sets to incorporate into your training – week when asking the athletes to maintain their goal pace, or max pace – and in Sam’s case, it was his opening 100m pace for his 400m goal time.
The below workout was a set I did with Sam during the preparations for the Beijing Games – and also with our A squad in Mansfield. The opening 100m from a dive was swam at his opening speed for his 400m goal time, as was the final 50m of the set. Sam would then hold his checking speed (2:30 & 1:15) for the 200’s and 3×100’s. The entire workout totalled to a volume of 4950m.
